Governor’s Island – Pumpkin Patch

Hello People. Tell me who doesn’t feel like enjoying good weather, especially when one knows that it might be the last weekend before the temperatures go down?

This is exactly when I stumbled upon this event at Governor’s Island that involved decorating the island with 5000 pumpkins. Then I made an impromptu decision to go to the Island and make the most out of my last (Or maybe last but one) sunny weekend.

For strangers with no awareness about governor’s Island, it is a 172-acre island in Manhattan, New York. Should you decide to visit, be sure to be informed about the events scheduled for the day of your visit.

This island is one of the best places to picnic with family and friends. I was on the Island with my husband and a friend. You could tour the Island either walking or biking. Since we had the entire day, we choose to explore the island walking.

We took a 4 express train from Grand Central to Wall street where we walked to the ferry (5-minute walk). The ferry to Governors Island from 11th Pier/Wall St is an eight-minute-ride and costs $2.75 each way.

img_20191019_120622-01.jpg

So, as we hopped out of the ferry we found cute signs guiding us to the Pumpkin patch. We passed across the William Castle en route to the pumpkin patch. The castles and the centuries-old buildings made me wonder about how much history this Island has gone through. I am certainly going back to learn it’s history.

We were famished with all the walking around and clicking pictures.

We started googling for food places on the Island and got a few options. Upon reaching the set location, we were amused to see food trucks. The amusement was because I was told that the Island is a car-free zone and people from New York love street food. You can pack your own food (as long as it’s not alcohol) and do a picnic on the lawns of the island.

After lunch, we walked until we came across the longest slide in New York (57 feet, as I was told). My husband and my friend haven’t gone on the slide. But, I did not want to miss a chance to be on the longest slide in NYC. There are slides of different lengths, feel free to choose which one you want to slide on.

We headed to the man-made hill which is 70 feet above sea level which offered beautiful views of the city. We walked past the glamping sites and new sit-outs that are under construction.

I am certainly not exaggerating when I tell you that the views, you get by looking around, and the sounds, you hear while walking along the water are the best things to experience. All the exhaustion caused by walking over 5 miles has been taken away.

Note: Note: Ferry has different schedules on weekdays and weekends, make sure to check the schedule before going. I am sure you don’t want to miss the last ferry to the city getting stuck on the island.

I might go there next week if its sunny, surprise me if you find me there.

October is for Pumpkin Picking !

Grabbing a pumpkin from a nearby market is convince.  But, visiting a farm on a sunny day, walking through colorful foliage, plucking the perfect apple, picking the best pumpkin, biting a fresh donut, sipping fresh hot cider with family and friends, fills your fall memories and warm moments to get through winter.

Initially, when I wrote a post on pumpkin picking, I decided to visit a different farm every year. However, the taste of donuts and apple cider from Wilken’s Farm is unmatched. I was disappointed with the donuts from the last two farms I have visited. So, hitting the road to Wilken’s farms again for the second time after two years.

This is a long weekend with all the schools giving a day off as its Columbus Day, so we decided to head out early. We started at around 9ish and went to a nearby cafe and had an amazing breakfast.

IMG_20191012_100207-01

The weather was so gloomy when we were out for breakfast and the forecast was cloudy. So, I haven’t carried my DSLR – Obviously because I was disappointed with the weather.

IMG_20191012_114322_271
Guess What? The sun was out so bright, skies so blue by the time we hit the road.

Here I am super excited to back at the Wilken Farms for the donuts. Oh, You should see the line for the donuts. I have included a video on my Instagram stories. We were in line for about 30-35 minutes before we got our hands on the delicious donuts, Banana bread, Coffeecake, Peach Pie, Lemonade, and Apple cider.

HippoBallerina has found her new home!

So, I follow Misschloenyc who has posed and posted pictures with Ms. Hippo on Instagram. Seeing the cute hippo instantly made me want to go see her. The 2.5 ton-statue, designed by Danish artist Bjørn Okholm Skaarup, was installed across from the Flatiron building on 22nd Street and Broadway. She was across from Lincoln Center way back in 2017 – but now she is back and is going to stay through Thanks giving.

“Standing over 15 feet high, Hippo Ballerina has found a happy home among New York’s skyscrapers… I am delighted when people of all ages interact with the bronze sculpture, as they pass, smiling and even posting photos to #dancewithhippoballerina. I know that Hippo Ballerina will enjoy living downtown!” said the artist, Skaarup, in a statement.

The statue was inspired by the dancing hippos in the classic Disney film Fantasia as well as Degas’ “Little Dancer Aged Fourteen” (Petite danseuse de quatorze ans). The new installation of the statue was made possible through NYC DOT Art & Event Programming, Cavalier Galleries and the Flatiron Partnership.

Fun Facts:
* The sand here is not made up of Silica, but is made up of Gypsum
* You might find an Oryx if you look out
* This is a monument and not a park (YES, I was taken back when I read it first)
* Get ready to get lost (Make sure to drop a google pin when you park your car)
* You will not find a single soul – Get sufficient water and a cap if you plan a hike (Short or Long)
Tip:
Arrive at the monument for sunset or Sunrise for the best views.
I left the place with an everlasting impression on my mind – I hope you would to.

Classic New England charm – City Island

Did you know there’s a quaint country-like island just off the tip of the Bronx?  It was a sunny day in New York and I’ve never been to City Island before. The trip to The City Island felt worlds away.

City Island, the Seaport of the Bronx, is what you would get if you crossed a New England seaside village with the Bronx. City Island is a neighbourhood in the Bronx, New York City, located on an island of the same name approximately 1.5 miles long by 0.5 miles wide. The population is under 5,000 and it’s a strange place to visit in the summer when everything is (mostly) open.

We kicked off our day with brunch at the City Island Diner. This classic diner, popular with locals, is also where Jerry Seinfeld took Ricky Gervais on an episode of Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

Ruth Markowe, the namesake and proprietor of this City Island antique shop, is a genuine lover of art and ephemera, and it shows in the collection she’s amassed here. Visitors will encounter not just the typical antiquing finds—though there are plenty of beautiful old things about—but also a wide breadth of found objects and unexpected, even unusual, art finds. The difference between junk and a masterpiece is in the eye of the beholder, but shoppers are assured they’re likely to find both here if they look hard enough.

City island is really great for sea food lovers. I personally am not a Sea food lover and I choose to have from some place that looked cute from the outside. There are a lot more options if you wish to taste the sea food.

My Latest Obsession – Orchard Street NYC

I have been living in New York city for about three years now and I have never been to any new places other than the typical tourist attractions. I visited the same places almost ten times now with different sets of people. I recently started discovering NYC through Instagram posts and various other blogs.

I saw these cute bears on MissChloenyc‘s profile and wanted to visit them so bad. They are on display at Galerie Perrotin through June 8, 2019. Sadly, it was closed the day I visited -which is when I decided to just stroll on the streets and fell in love. Orchard street is one of the main thoroughfares of the neighbourhood. With so much history and culture, it can be difficult to navigate through the sprawling district but its totally worth it.

I started from the Essex station which has a beautifully tiled fish all over the walls.

Frost Fest 2019

I walk across the Bryant park everyday and was really excited to see the Bumper ice cars here. This is my first time seeing a bumper car on ice which was totally a blast for me. I was told that the bumper cars on ice are one of the new activities to appear in Bryant Park as part of the Frost Fest. I booked tickets online as I was not sure if any would be left at the ticketing counter on a Saturday night.

There was also live ice carving and the man carved a bear. The fountain was frozen and of course what else do you expect in New York during the winters?

We had to wait for atleast two hours before getting on the cars. My face and feet started hurting very badly because of the frost bites and wanted to go into a warm place so bad. However, thanks to my husband for not letting me leave the line and we got to get on the bumper cars. The car was so much fun.

It’s $15 for a 10-minute ride—a little pricey, but totally worth it.

The Lodge is Bryant Park’s new winter food hall and bar. It’s on the north east side of the skating rink and has enough options of food and drink too make everyone happy. It’s a perfect first date spot. Get a couple of their hot cocktail options, try to cozy up, and if you click, grab a bite from one of the many food vendors.

Pumpkin Picking in New York!!

I have been to Pumpkin picking to two places in NewYork in two consecutive years. I will just include the pictures of both the places without much write up.

The first time we had been to pumpkin picking was in 2016 to Wilkens farm. It was a bright sunny day.

14721493_1513491575344084_4471739886205489920_n14713688_1307329799291829_6753649951898205661_n14915300_1313400618684747_1760673837808223938_n22489687_1677282182296587_3504928815112261775_n

We had fresh apple cider and donuts. The donuts are crazily insane and I was told that people go there just for the donuts and no wonder they do.

14604838_1309792502378892_729941532487927115_n
They had cute benches !

The second time we had been to Demarest Farms. This time we were not very happy with Apple cider and donuts. But there were many photo booths for children and the entire place was really vibrant. I think its a must visit place for kids.

This is just one of many photo booths they had !!

I look forward to visiting many more farms. And I loved the choice of the clothes I choose to wear. If the sky is blue, wear something that has so much blue and you will not regret. Or you can also pick something in shades of Orange or red like I did !!
